Altered Mini Notebook...

"making notes" by Rita Hutcheson-Cobbs

I went to my local dollar store to get a couple of these to alter for a swap I was working with. I made one using the mini composition notebooks which I got 3/$1 and then I saw these which are a bit larger also for the same price. I woke from a sound sleep and sketched out what I wanted to do with the cover of this notebook. I took out the wire and put it with my beading supplies to use later in something, but replaced it with the twine. I created the front with scraps of paper, ribbon, lace and diecuts. Then I had a piece of chain left from some charms I was making and added the cute heart shaped locket to it for a vintage look. The butterfly charm was sent to me in a RAK and the lace just called for one to be attached. The front still will lay flat for making notes on the inside.

Here is a closer look at the binding I made for this notebook.
It flips easily too...
I did add glossy accents to the diecuts for added pop to the cover.

I added the same paper to the back and distressed it just as I did the front. I also added paper to the inside covers so that it would be well balanced and complete the recipe for altering this cute notebook. Loving it...I hope that my special friend will love it too! It is a thank you for her kindness to me a couple of months ago. I thought she would enjoy something handmade.

I gave myself the best gift of all...

"good times" altered composition book
in honor of saving the ta-tas for breast cancer awareness, self-checks & mammograms
available in my store at www.RitaHutchesonCobbs.com

I love my body, every inch of it...and there are a lot of inches...I love my arms, my legs, my neck since it so sweetly holds my head up, and my nose and my ears and even my mouth. I also love something else so today, I gave myself the best gift I could possibly give me or my family...I chose to get a mammogram. I went to my family physician last month and she went over the process and gave me some information to help me go through the process. It wasn't my first rodeo but it had been many years since I have had one. She gave me the orders and I called to set up my appointment and was met with the nicest group of people at Athens-Limestone Medical East, Athens, Alabama. I was a little nervous going to the appointment but Guida, the radiology technician, was very kind and understanding. I have no morals or scruples obviously, because the gown was left in the dressing area beside the room the mammogram was to be performed. Guida told me step by step what would take place and then repeated the process with each step she took in the process. I was in and out within 20 minutes.

The room was comfortable and generously decorated in pink with painted portraits of pink roses. However, the small 4x6 card caught my attention. Did you know breast cancer isn't a respecter of person, age, gender? I never thought about that before. When I was sixteen, I found a knot in my breast. It frightened me but fortunately it turned out to be fiber-cystic. I am thrilled that I chose to do this especially since I decided to be 53 yrs old this year. =) It was time.

So a big thank you to Dr. Valerie Wright, who has been a God-send to our family for many years now and for listening to my "gift to me" ideas, which are many, plus thank you to Athens-Limestone Hospital for providing Medical East with comfort, kindness and peace from the time you walk in the door until the time you leave. Congrads to Guida for winning the Rita's Rockin' Awesome Award of the day!!

Have you made your appointment? Don't you think a mammogram is the best you could give yourself and your family? Regardless of age or gender, schedule yours today! Please...God gave us tatas and we should take care of them...so let's do this!! =)

Hamburger Pie Recipe served up with Mashed Potatoes...

Hamburger Pie topped with Black Bean Salsa and served with Mashed Potatoes

1 lb super lean ground beef (I get mine from Schwans in 2 lb packages)
1/2 cupped diced onion
2 tablespoons flour (I used self-rising since that is all I had on hand)
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 cup diced tomatoes
1 cup of kernel corn (I used Schwans frozen corn)
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons minced garlic
1 teaspoon brown sugar
6 slices of sandwich bread
2 tablespoon butter, real butter please, softened
1 cup shredded cheese
1 cup salsa (I used purchased black bean salsa)
pepper

1. Preheat oven at 350 degrees.
2. Combine beef, onion, garlic into skillet, cook until hamburger is crumbly and onions are transparent.
3. Drain the meat mixture (I then rinse my meat under hot water to get rid of any left over grease but the great part of using Schwans is that there is virtually no fat).
4. Place meat mixture back into the skillet. Add the flour and chili powder. Cook, stir for 1 minute.
5. Stir in tomatoes and corn. Bring to a simmer breaking up tomatoes. Cook for about 3 minutes.
6. Stir in salt and brown sugar until well mixed.
7.  Pour mixture into a baking dish and pour the salsa on top of the mixture and set aside.
8.  Cut the bread slices into 1/4 pieces. Spread each piece with the butter.
9.  Place the bread pieces over the top of the salsa with the buttered side facing up.
10. Bake for 30 minutes. Then cover with cheese and serve.

I added mashed potatoes which I added some mayo too...it was delicious. This recipe was taken from the Joy of Cooking cookbook but changed here and there. I have favorite ingredients and garlic is one of them. I also added the salsa and shredded cheese to the dish. We loved it...quick and easy and could be made ahead of time for the next day. I am so loving cooking with real butter...and you know what...the cholesterol is looking really good as a result...ummmm

Then for dessert I served 2 pies, one chocolate and one vanilla, which were fat free...ummmm....

I created this "charmed I am sure" jewelry set from the remaining beads
from a charm I created for a swap I participated in...

The sparkle is fabulous and both pieces are light and easy to wear...
I always add the lead bead to the back of my pieces so that I have a good balance on my neck...

This is the charm I originally created...

Bruschetta Recipe with Two Different Toppings...

Bruschetta with Tomatoes, Basil, and Black Olives

Bruschetta with sauteed Onions and Mushrooms and topped with Black Olives

After watching the movie Julia/Julie, I wanted to make the Bruschetta that the character made at the beginning of the movie. I found the recipe in the Joy of Cooking cookbook and decided to make it. Since a couple of people in our family doesn't eat tomatoes, I decided to create this dish using two different toppings and both came out fabulous. So, here is the recipe with a few twists that our son, Ethan, and I added to it. He was a huge help in sauteing the mushrooms and onions.

2 loaves of baguette bread
1/2 cup of butter, real butter
4 cups of diced fresh Roma tomatoes
1 tablespoon of finely chopped basil
2 cups of diced sweet onion
3 cups of sliced mushrooms (I used portabella and white mushrooms, half and half)
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1/3 cup minced garlic
olive oil
salt
pepper

1. Wash and dice the tomatoes into small pieces and place in a bowl.
2. Add the basil, sprinkle with salt and pepper, stir. Cover and set aside.
3. Wash, peel and dice the onion into small pieces.
4. Wash and slice the mushrooms.
5. Place the butter into a large skillet to melt. When the butter has melted pour it into a glass bowl and leave on the stove so it will stay melted. Put 2 teaspoons of the butter back into the skillet.
6. Add a layer of the mushrooms but don't crowd them, they won't brown (Julia Child says that =). This is a patient process. Cook all the mushrooms just like this until they are brown and soft.
7. Place the sauteed mushrooms in a drainer so that they won't have access butter/water in the mixture. Continually add teaspoons of the butter to the skillet with each batch of mushrooms/onions sauteed so that the skillet doesn't burn the mushrooms.
8. Add the onions to the skillet in a single layer with some of the butter. Add 1 teaspoon of minced garlic. Add a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Continue this process until all the onions are sauteed.
9. Allow the onions to drain with the mushrooms and toss them together.
10. Cut the baguette in half lengthwise. Then cut it into 6 even pieces.
11. Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray and lay the pieces on it.
12. Broil in the oven until the bread is lightly toasted.
13. Remove from the oven, rub in olive oil.
14. Top the baguette lightly with minced garlic and cover in mozzarella cheese.
15. Then place back into the oven on broil until the cheese is melted. Watch carefully so that they don't burn.
16. Divide the baguette between to plates. Top one set with the onion/mushroom mixture and top the other with the tomato mixture. Sprinkle all with salt, pepper, mozzarella cheese and black olives to garnish.
17. (Optional) Sour cream on the side is a taste addition too.

My family loved this!! Ethan came up with some additional toppings that we must try in the near future. Both toppings were wonderful and both had very different flavors...Enjoy!

Altered Mini Composition Notebook...

I made this cute little altered notebook for JoAnn McKenzie
on TheScrapBeach Swap I participated in.
Fun and victorian...

I love this lace! The paper scrap from K&Company...

The charms are from a RAK that was sent to me...
I thought they added a great element for two page markers...
Angel of protection and the key to the heart of the creation...

I made the metal tag and then added the button as a feature embellishment.
I wanted to keep both covers flat so that it would make easier writing...

I like to cover both sides of my books.
If there is writing on the inside covers, I cover them too,
but that wasn't the case with these little books...
I paid $.77 for this notebook but then found some at the dollar store
for 3/$1. The covers aren't as strong but would work well for this project...

Hope you enjoyed this idea...
JoAnn, thank you for lifting my creative juices to overflowing...
Quick easy gift for someone special...

What to take to a Scrapbooking Crop?

Scrapbook Layout of Joel fishing by Rita Hutcheson-Cobbs
I think the layout sketch/frame is from Kirsty Wiseman.

I should begin my defining what a crop is in the scrapbooking realm. A scrapbooking crop or simply a crop is a gathering of like minded people who bring their photographs, memorabilia, embellishments, paper, albums and create layouts such as the one above. It is great to attend a crop because you get to see other peoples work and find inspiration if needed. My problem is that I never really can decide what to take and I become frustrated by wanting to take everything but then realizing, I would need an 18-wheeler and I since I can't drive one, I must get organized. So, I compiled a list of tips hoping this will help you get to your next crop:

Tips before I began to think about packing a single item:
1. Plan, plan and plan especially if you have family at home, even just a partner/spouse or pet. They need to know where you are and when you might be home as well as food and water set out for them, yes, even the adults in the picture lol.
2. If you have children, regardless of age, and they don't have their own scrapbooking stash to haul, get a babysitter or childcare for them. If you are nursing a baby, then plan to leave formula or leave to care for the little one. An all day event that could be noisy could be upsetting to small children especially. I always try to be mindful not to carry my dog Chocolate because someone might not be so comfortable with a cute fluffy dog begging for their attention. Plus you need time away to refresh and renew, what better way than with a bunch of friends or the opportunity to meet new friends.
3. Freeze a super large bottle half full with water so that you can finish filling it up and stay hydrated during the crop event.
4. I personally, due to my driving time to most places, do not attend crops that are not more than six hours. I don't attend crops that start in the morning, end in the afternoon and resume in the evening and end at midnight. I have no where to go in between 3-5 pm because I don't have children in school to pick up or supper to get on the table. So unless I can continue working during that time, I don't attend. (yes, I could go out for supper but usually I carry something to snack on and eat so that I can spend the time working on projects...that's just me...)

Questions to ask:
1. Will there be tools at the crop such as die-cutting machines, punches, large cutter, paper trimmers, embossing, etc.
2. Will there be snacks/meals provided? Do I need to bring a snack/drink to share?
3.  How much work space will I have? (Most are at least 6 feet, but ask to be sure)
4. What theme do I want to work on at the event?
5. How much time will I have to work on my project?
6. Do I need my computer and if so will there be wireless internet?

Things to definitely take to a crop include water bottle, scrapbook paper/card stock, adhesive, photos, album, completed pages for the project if you have any, scissors, personal trimmer (5x7" for example), ruler, corner rounder, Crop-a-Dile tools, stickers, coordinating buttons, ribbons, lace, flowers, charms, brads, eyelets, stamps, inks, chocolate candy to boast your ADHD (oh wait, that's for me, sorry) and other embellishments for your project. I also take my markers/colored pencil caddy like this one:

I can journal or doodle or whatever I may wish to do with this caddy...

Also, I carry another container that has most of my distressing tools, distressing inks, glue, Glossy Accents, and baby wipes.  On the other side, I have my three most used Glimmer Mist and my heat gun fits down in the middle.  I carry a large plastic coffee container that I house 2 coffee filters so that I can Glimmer Mist and dry the item I wish to distress in a contained environment. (Obviously, this bag is a bit more full since I took this photo LOL.)

I will be attending a couple of crops this coming month and I have already decided my theme. I will be taking recipe clippings and photographs I have picked of family, combining the two into a cookbook scrapbook. So I will carry the stickers, papers, Cricut cartridge, embossing folders and dies that I wish  to use for this project. Card stock will be a must for this project. Starting with a theme helps me stay focused and then I only take what I need. If by chance I forget something, add a sticky note or a piece of paper on the layout with a note to remind you. Still not sure what theme to work with? How about the last holiday or event?

If you are staying overnight make sure to pack a separate bag with PJs, comfortable clothes, walking shoes, toiletries, anti-snoring devices, reading glasses, contacts, medications and so forth. A comfortable pillow to sit on during crops and to sleep with if you wish. Cell phone (always on silent during the crop...take calls outside the crop area as not to disturb anyone) and don't forget your charger.

I hope this helps and please post things that I may have forgotten on the list of must haves. Also, send me an email if you have any questions, my contact information is to the right of my blog. Finally, put on your hat and create a happy heart, stand and do a happy dance because you are about to enter the fun house of love, inspiration, laughter, and creativity because you will have tons and tons of fun!!!

My workspace at the Lake Guntersville Retreat, February 2011
***Remember above all else when packing for a crop regardless of the length of the event...
what you load in your car is what you will have to unload and reload at the crop...
Just saying...***
Finally, always be considerate of other working around you...a good rule of thumb is, you may not mind but others might...so just be aware of the golden rule and be others focused but most of all...
Have a GREAT TIME!!!

Tutorial: Accordion Paper Folded Flowers Using Music Sheets

These were such fun to make...
I did distress them more which you can see on the cards at the end of this tutorial...
So, let's get started!

Ingredients you will need for this recipe include: music page, scissors, Glossy Accents, 1/4" red double sided tape, Glimmer Mist color of your choice, scrap white card stock, buttons, string and a brown marker (optional, I used it around the edges to distress the flowers a little more...)

I used an old hymnal page, so I tore out one page, cut 2 pieces in 1 1/4" strips.
Then I began folding it back and forth like an accordion with the fold being about 1/4" wide.

I did fold both pieces at the same time...

Each piece should look like this when done.
IF you have a large piece of music, you should be able to cut one strip instead of two...

At the end of one piece that is folded downward, I added a strip of the red double sided tape.
Then I adhered it to the fold that was upward to create a natural fold in the flower.
I did this to both ends until the paper was a circle...a crazy unmanageable circle LOL...

Then I took a piece of scrap card stock, which was from my punch stash obviously,
added some Glossy Accents to the top and then held the flower folds carefully together
as I placed the flower on top of the Glossy Accents.

I could have used glue but Glossy Accents and E6000 are my favorite quick drying adhesives.
I let this dry for about a minute.

Once the flower is adhered to the card stock it should look like this...

I placed the flower in my handy dandy recycled plastic coffee container with the coffee filters in the bottom
and sprayed it with Glimmer Mist (Bronze is what I used for this project)...

I dried the flower with my heat gun...

Using Glossy Accents I adhered a two layer button that I strung together
to the top of the flower. I held the button in place for about a minute to
allow it to dry.

Two of my flowers turned out like this...I did distress them a little more...

I added the flowers to some cards I made with scrap paper from a
Close to My Heart kit that I used making some scrapbook pages...
I added the pins that I made also for a swap I am participating in...

Here you can see more of the distressing on the flower...

I thought of making some of these flowers and using my edging scissors to create a cute element...

I wish I knew where I got these buttons because they are smooth and easy to thread...

...pretty neat project for this flower challenged artist! =)

I hope you will create some fun projects using these flowers. I had such fun.
The hymnal I found in a thrift shop and love using it for various projects.
So, use your scraps and make something fun to embellish with your flowers...
